Suna foarte frumos. In centrul Galaxiei exista o imensa gaura neagra (Paranal-La Silla)

http://www.eso.org/public/news/eso0846/

extrem de "infometata". Va "impacheta" totul.

ESO Top 10 Astronomical Discoveries
http://www.eso.org/public/science/top10.html

Sunt pozitionate in Cerro Paranal, Desertul Atacama (nordul Republicii Chile). In zona sunt si alte telescoape foarte performante (La Silla s.a.). In Spatiu, SUA, cu telescoapele orbitale.

http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/medicine/laureates/2012/

The Nobel Prize recognizes two scientists who discovered that mature, specialised cells can be reprogrammed to become immature cells capable of developing into all tissues of the body. Their findings have revolutionised our understanding of how cells and organisms develop.

John B. Gurdon discovered in 1962 that the specialisation of cells is reversible. In a classic experiment, he replaced the immature cell nucleus in an egg cell of a frog with the nucleus from a mature intestinal cell. This modified egg cell developed into a normal tadpole. The DNA of the mature cell still had all the information needed to develop all cells in the frog.

Shinya Yamanaka discovered more than 40 years later, in 2006, how intact mature cells in mice could be reprogrammed to become immature stem cells. Surprisingly, by introducing only a few genes, he could reprogram mature cells to become pluripotent stem cells, i.e. immature cells that are able to develop into all types of cells in the body.

These groundbreaking discoveries have completely changed our view of the development and cellular specialisation. We now understand that the mature cell does not have to be confined forever to its specialised state. Textbooks have been rewritten and new research fields have been established. By reprogramming human cells, scientists have created new opportunities to study diseases and develop methods for diagnosis and therapy.

Cine are urechi d-auzit, sper s-auza.

P.S. Iaca n-o fost să fie ! A ratat anul ăsta bosonul  Higgs Nobelul.

9 October 2012

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2012 to

Serge Haroche
Collège de France and Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris, France

and

David J. Wineland
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and University of Colorado Boulder, CO, USA

"for ground-breaking experimental methods that enable measuring and manipulation of individual quantum systems"

Particle control in a quantum world

Serge Haroche and David J. Wineland have independently invented and developed methods for measuring and manipulating individual particles while preserving their quantum-mechanical nature, in ways that were previously thought unattainable.

The Nobel Laureates have opened the door to a new era of experimentation with quantum physics by demonstrating the direct observation of individual quantum particles without destroying them. For single particles of light or matter the laws of classical physics cease to apply and quantum physics takes over. But single particles are not easily isolated from their surrounding environment and they lose their mysterious quantum properties as soon as they interact with the outside world. Thus many seemingly bizarre phenomena predicted by quantum physics could not be directly observed, and researchers could only carry out thought experiments that might in principle manifest these bizarre phenomena.

Two Americans won the Nobel Prize in chemistry Wednesday for studies of how the cells in our bodies pick up signals as diverse as hormones, smells, flavors and light—work that is key to developing better medicines.

S-a acordat premiul Nobel pentru pace...
Destinatar... Uniunea Europeana!

Peste cateva ore, dupa anuntul oficial facut la Stockholm, profesorul Schekman a acordat primul interviu telefonic, scurt si emotionat, site-ului comitetului Nobel.

Astazi, catedra de Biologie Celulara a Universitatii Yale, clasata a patra in lume in QS World University Rankings, poarta numele aceluiasi profesor roman, nascut in 1912 la Iasi.

http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/physics/laureates/2014/advanced-physicspr...

The Nobel Prize in Physics 2014 was awarded jointly to Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura "for the invention of efficient blue light-emitting diodes which has enabled bright and energy-saving white light sources".

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2014 was awarded jointly to Eric Betzig, Stefan W. Hell and William E. Moerner "for the development of super-resolved fluorescence microscopy".

http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/chemistry/laureates/2014/

Stefan W. Hell

Born: 1962, Arad, Romania

Affiliation at the time of the award: Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry, Göttingen, Germany, German Cancer Research Center, Heidelberg, Germany

E bine ca macar persoane nascute in Romania mai iau cate un Nobel din cand in cand...
Pentru fizica ma bucur in mod special fiind vorba pentru prima data de doua persoane pe care le cunosc, fiind chiar profesor invitat in 2009 pentru 2 luni in laboratorul profesorului Amano, la Universitatea din Nagoya unde am activat cinci ani pana in 2006. Legatura a fost insa indirecta printr-un coleg si prieten care era atunci profesor asociat in acelasi laborator (M. Yamaguchi). Akasaki a fost principalul inventator si brevetele lui au adus cate un milion de euro anual, timp de 25 de ani Universitati din Nagoya. "Akasaki Institute" a fost construit in campusul universitatii inca din 2004... Ca pentru orice lucru serios este nevoie de mai multe ingrediente: o institutie buna, un subiect de impact, oameni cu daruire, finantare, suport pentru recunoastere... Cu Nakamura lucrurile au fost mai complicate, fiind vorba de un efort individual intr-o companie care mai mult i-a tolerat cercetarea decat a sustinut-o, motiv pentru care a si plecat in US la inceputul anilor 2000.  http://en.nagoya-u.ac.jp/about_nu/facilities/akasaki/index.html. ;

http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/literature/laureates/2014/bio-bibl.html

Patrick Modiano was born on July 30, 1945, in Boulogne-Billancourt, a suburb of Paris. His father was a businessman and his mother an actress. Having left school, he studied at Lycée Henri-IV in Paris, where his teacher in geometry was Raymond Queneau, a writer who was to play a decisive role for his development. Already in 1968, Modiano made his debut as a writer with La place de l’étoile, a novel that attracted much attention.

Modiano’s works centre on topics such as memory, oblivion, identity and guilt. The city of Paris is often present in the text and can almost be considered a creative participant in the works. Rather often his tales are built on an autobiographical foundation, or on events that took place during the German occupation. He sometimes draws material for his works from interviews, newspaper articles or own notes which he has accumulated over the years. His novels show an affinity with one another, and it happens that earlier episodes are extended or that persons recur in different tales. The author’s home town and its history often serve to link the tales together. A work of documentary character, with World War II as background, is Dora Bruder (1997; Dora Bruder, 1999) which builds on the true tale of a fifteen-year old girl in Paris who becomes one of the victims of the Holocaust. Among the works which most clearly reveal an autobiographical character one notes Un pedigree from 2005.

Some of Modiano’s works have been translated into English, among them Les boulevards de ceinture (1972; Ring Roads : A Novel, 1974), Villa Triste (1975; Villa Triste, 1977), Quartier perdu (1984; A Trace of Malice, 1988) and Voyage de noces (1990; Honeymoon, 1992). His latest work is the novel Pour que tu ne te perdes pas dans le quartier (2014). Modiano has also written children’s books and film scripts. Together with the film director Louis Malle he made the feature movie Lacombe Lucien (1974), enacted during the German occupation of France.

His latest work is the novel Pour que tu ne te perdes pas dans le quartier (2014). Modiano has also written children’s books and film scripts. Together with the film director Louis Malle he made the feature movie Lacombe Lucien (1974), enacted during the German occupation of France.

Chiar mai devreme  citeam un articol in Le Monde despre premiul Nobel de literatura , articol  in care Patrick Modiano era citat printre favoriti:

http://lexpansion.lexpress.fr/actualite-economique/le-nobel-d-economie-attribue-...

"What It’s Like to Carry Your Nobel Prize through Airport Security"

http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/2014/10/10/nobel-prize-airport-...

"Nine scientists became new Nobel Laureates this week when the 2014 Nobel Prizes in Chemistry, Physics and Physiology or Medicine were announced. Eric Betzig, Stefan W. Hell and William E. Moerner won the chemistry prize for improving the microscope; Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura won the physics award for inventing blue light-emitting diode (LED) lights; and John O’Keefe, May-Britt Moser and Edvard I. Moser won the medicine prize for discovering cells that make up the brain’s navigational system. They won’t pick up their medals, certificates and cash prizes until a December ceremony in Stockholm, but their names have already been added to the lists of the 196 previous physics laureates, the 166 chemistry laureates and the 204 medicine laureates.

Winning the prize, considered the highest honor in each of these fields, tends to have a dramatic effect on scientists’ lives. “Your life does change overnight,” recalled astrophysicist Brian Schmidt, who won the 2011 Nobel Physics Prize for co-discovering dark energy—the mysterious element of the universe that is causing the expansion of spacetime to speed up. “It’s not like you get advanced warning, they just sort of call you up, in my case, in the middle of cooking dinner. ‘Hello? By the way, you’ve won the Nobel Prize.’”

Schmidt spoke about his experience at an event in New York City last month celebrating the construction of one of the largest observatories in the world, the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT), due to open in 2020 in Chile. His institution, Australian National University, is part of the GMT consortium. Among other scientific goals, the telescope will study faraway stars and galaxies to understand the expansion of space and the nature of the dark energy that is pulling it apart, which is thought to make up about 70 percent of the total mass and energy in the universe.

Among the many changes the Nobel Prize brought to Schmidt’s life: travel hassles. Here’s what he said it’s like to carry a Nobel medal aboard an airplane:

“There are a couple of bizarre things that happen. One of the things you get when you win a Nobel Prize is, well, a Nobel Prize. It’s about that big, that thick [he mimes a disk roughly the size of an Olympic medal], weighs a half a pound, and it’s made of gold.

“When I won this, my grandma, who lives in Fargo, North Dakota, wanted to see it. I was coming around so I decided I’d bring my Nobel Prize. You would think that carrying around a Nobel Prize would be uneventful, and it was uneventful, until I tried to leave Fargo with it, and went through the X-ray machine. I could see they were puzzled. It was in my laptop bag. It’s made of gold, so it absorbs all the X-rays—it’s completely black. And they had never seen anything completely black.

“They’re like, ‘Sir, there’s something in your bag.’
I said, ‘Yes, I think it’s this box.’
They said, ‘What’s in the box?’
I said, ‘a large gold medal,’ as one does.
So they opened it up and they said, ‘What’s it made out of?’
I said, ‘gold.’
And they’re like, ‘Uhhhh. Who gave this to you?’
‘The King of Sweden.’
‘Why did he give this to you?’
‘Because I helped discover the expansion rate of the universe was accelerating.’
At which point, they were beginning to lose their sense of humor. I explained to them it was a Nobel Prize, and their main question was, ‘Why were you in Fargo?’”"
